Ten rounds of negotiations were held and concluded on 26 April 2002. The agreement was signed on 18 November 2002. The agreement includes a political dialogue, a section on cooperation and a section on trade. The fifth round of negotiations was held in Brussels, Belgium, from 15 to 19 July 2019. Chile and the European Union signed a framework cooperation agreement in Florence, Italy, on 21 June 1996 to establish a political and economic association. This Agreement entered into force on 1 February 1999. The agreement covers all important areas of trade relations, including trade in goods, trade in services and investment, government procurement, competition and intellectual property. A Joint Committee shall be set up to monitor the Agreement. It also contains provisions on dispute settlement. In addition, the EFTA States and Chile have concluded bilateral agreements on agriculture. In early 2016, Chilean delegations held meetings with senior officials from the European Union and the European Free Trade Association to promote the modernization of Chile`s trade agreements with the two blocs. In the framework of the Sixth Council of the Association Agreement between Chile and the European Union in April 2015, Chile and the European Union discussed options for modernising their current Association Agreement.
A round of negotiations to modernise the agreement was held in Santiago, Chile, from 15 to 19 January 2018. The European Council published the negotiating directives for the new modernised agreement on 22 January 2018. . . .
